On the results of the international conference “Food Safety and Risk Analysis”

The International Conference “Food Safety and Risk Analysis” organized jointly by Rospotrebnadzor and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in accordance with the order of the Government of the Russian Federation has successfully ended on May 19 in Sochi.

The Conference has become the first step for the joint three-year program of Russia and FAO on supporting the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia in development and implementation of national strategies on decreasing the threat of antimicrobial resistance. Due to the Russian contribution FAO will provide assistance on evaluation and capacity building of laboratory facilities; reference-center on control of antibiotic resistance will be founded in Russia. Methodology for detection of antibiotics residues in food will be developed. This is especially important as according to the forecasts, total losses caused by antibiotic resistance problems will compose 8% of global GDP by 2050.

The Conference gathered about 250 delegates from 23 countries worldwide. It became the first Russian-speaking international forum organized in the Russian Federation which gathered leading Russian and foreign specialists on food safety, risk assessment. The delegates represented the relevant Ministries and Authorities, UN organizations, scientific communities and business.

Antibiotic resistance was the topic for discussions held between delegates from world leading scientific institutes dealing with food safety including Leicester University (UK), University of North Carolina (USA), University of Granada (Spain), University of Ankara (Turkey), University of Florida (USA), University of Utrecht (Netherlands), Ohio State University (USA), Delaware University (USA), Belgrade University (Serbia), University of Vienna (Austria), Federal Publicly Funded Institution of Science “Federal Research Center for Nutrition, Biotechnology and Food Safety” (Russia), Federal Budget Institution of Science “Federal Research Center of Medical Prophylactic Technologies for Health Risk Management” (Russia).

The conference also attracted the attention of representatives of the business involved in the production and distribution of food products - Mars Corporation, Nestle, the Association of Retail Companies, the Union of Food Ingredients, the Juice Union and others.

In total, 14 sessions were held within the Conference, including 10 sessions on special issues related to modern approaches in assessing food contamination with microbiological agents, antimicrobial resistance, food adulteration, and risk communication. Russian and foreign participants presented more than 40 reports.

A final communiqué of the co-chairs of the Conference - Anna Popova, head of Rospotrebnadzor, and Mr. Ren Wang, FAO Deputy Director-General was adopted.

Brief summaries of chairpersons of the parallel sessions will form the basis for the recommendations to be prepared as a result of the Conference.

Participants of the event highly appreciated the organization of the Conference, the substantive side of presentations and discussions, highlighting the leading role of Russia in the region in cooperation with FAO to provide the population with quality and safe food.
