Negotiations between the Head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova and the Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Juan Carlos Lentijo were held at the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing on July 18, 2016.

The parties discussed the current status and prospects of cooperation between Rospotrebnadzor and the IAEA in the field of radiation safety of the population.

Following the negotiations the parties signed the Practical arrangements on cooperation in the area of radiation safety - a framework document defining the main areas of bilateral cooperation in order to ensure the continuous protection of people and the environment from ionizing radiation. In particular, the parties intend to develop cooperation in the field of medical radiation exposure and radiation exposure of public and workers from natural radiation sources (radon) and within the control of radionuclide concentrations in food and drinking water.

Mr. Lentijo noted a great contribution of Russian specialists to the development of the current system of radiation safety, as well as the priceless experience gained upon the remediation of territories after the Chernobyl NPP accident.

Implementation of the Practical arrangements will encourage exchange of existing considerable Russian knowledge and best practices in the specified areas with the IAEA Member States and the development of international safety standards involving our country, as well as the development of joint science projects.
