On Russian-Guinean cooperation on prevention of infectious diseases

Head of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) Dr. Anna Popova took part in a meeting with the delegation of the Republic of Guinea headed by the State Minister at the President of Guinea on investment and public-private partnerships, Mr. Ibrahima Kassori Fofana. The meeting was held on January 14 in Moscow and was also attended by representatives of the United Company RUSAL which assists Russian specialists in Guinea.

The Guinean side expressed gratitude to the President of the Russian Federation, the Government of the Russian Federation and Rospotrebnadzor for their assistance during the outbreak of Ebola in Guinea, which was instrumental in defeating the epidemic as well as in improving overall sanitary-epidemiological situation in the country. The results achieved by the Russian scientists in hospital in Guinea, which was built with the financial help of the Russian private sector, were highly appreciated by the President of the Republic of Guinea A. Conde.

During the negotiations, the participants summed up the results of joint activities over the past few years and outlined further steps for the development of cooperation between Russia and Guinea in combating infectious diseases.

The creation of Guinea-Russian Research Center of Epidemiology and Prevention of Infectious Diseases (Science Centre) at the premises of Institute Pasteur in Guinea will be an effective step to further strengthen bilateral cooperation. (The creation of Science Centre is made in accordance with the decision of the Government of the Russian Federation). The sides discussed a possibility of the Science Center being engaged in researching and using Ebola vaccine developed in the Russian Federation.

The possibility of establishing a working party on coordination and cooperation in scientific researches, within the Russian-Guinean Intergovernmental Commission, was also discussed by the participants.

Parties have reached an agreement on administrative, organizational and technical issues for Russian specialists in Guinea. Also Agreements between the Rospotrebnadzor and the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Republic of Guinea will be signed shortly as well.
